In 1983, Eiji Toyoda, chairman of Toyota, envisioned a plan to create a luxury motoring brand that would compete with the best. With 20 design engineers, they immersed themselves into one of the most affluent suburbs, Laguna Beach. To understand the concept of American luxury, they learnt the culture in the lavish homes, schools and five-star restaurants. After six years with 1 400 engineers and $1billion, the Lexus LS400 was launched in the United States. More than 20 years later, the Lexus brand has become synonymous with sophistication, refinement, performance and safety – the ideals of contemporary luxury. By 1992, Lexus has outsold its German rivals as the number one luxury import vehicle in America.
